MY REVIEW
5 OF 5 SHADOW MAN

WOW THIS BOOK WAS SO DAM CREEPY! I have never ever read a horror like this one. There is so much going on before you that at times I was like okay did I just read that or am I bugging out? Then I would go back and re-read it just to make sure I was not making things up. But Dam oh dam I have to read the first book because this is book two and it is Lash's story and how he became the cold hearted killer he is.

Lash comes from poverty. He knows he wants to make money and leave all that behind but to make money he has to do some not so nice things. he becomes bodyguard to the most powerful vampire in the world Abraham. It's working for Abraham where Lash learns that it is better to do what is told then go against it. He becomes this person that is cruel and mean. He hurts people sometimes for the job but sometimes for pleasure. He gets this high off of it but he soon finds himself in trouble and wanting to leave all that behind. But how do you put a past behind you when it defined you and your whole world?

Soon Lash will have to trust someone he is not sure can be trusted. As he goes to this person he is aware that he is going to need more protection so he seeks out the one person that can give him that. But what will he find in the end? Will it protection or will it be something else? This book was creepy as all get up but I love a good horror and if you are looking for that then come along for the greatest horror ride of a lifetime!

WHY A WERESNAKE?

What kind of fu—um…what kind of title is that? Why not a weresnake? I admit I’m not cuddly like a Pomeranian, but hey, would you really be that interested in my exploits if I were? You want danger, you want suspense, you want some fucking heads to roll, then you came to the right place, Dolls and Gents. I’m not going to waste your time with bull, or draw out the mystery any longer than it takes me to drive my survival knife right through the beating heart of the matter. So lets cut this small talk and get down to business.

Lash was the story of my origin. Shadow Man is the continuation of my life. Yes, there’s rarely a dull moment, and it often involves some killing. When your back is against the wall, and your hand is forced, you have to kill. I’ve never understood why some say how hard it is. When it’s a matter of survival, you do what you have to do. I always have.

Eli was another troublemaker, at least, that’s what everyone thought when he first showed up. When the vampire elite discovered that there were close to a thousand followers backing him up, they got nervous. And when they get nervous, I get sent in.

For years I watched him for my vampire boss, Abraham, waiting for the other shoe to drop. But nothing happened for months on end, even when the female vampire spy Jeanna was sent in to discover the truth. But I admit, I was kind of distracted. I’d met Nancy by then, and she kept me more than busy. Our only real problem was she wanted more than I was ready to give. It didn’t help that Abraham was hot and heavy with his own squeeze, Winnie, and had proposed. Nancy was hoping for a double wedding. I was considering the idea, even if I was reluctant to put my heart out there to get mangled again. Then Eli finally made his move.

He made his escape with a bang, to put it lightly. Everything went to complete shit, to be more accurate (yes, I’m trying to refrain from swearing, but sometimes I have to express myself, Ms. Hall). Jeanna was killed, my brother was killed, and I was nearly killed myself. The vampire elite were in hysterics, to put it mildly. To track down Eli and his band, I was forced into working with my hated enemy Danial and his own weresnake man, Burl.

A lot of things happened I regret. Some of those were things I did myself. Please remember that I didn’t become Lash because I wanted to be a killer. I became Lash because I had to. Give me a chance, and I promise you action, suspense, and mayhem, laced with a little sex for spice and more than a little humor. I’m just like you, except I sometimes have scales (and fangs). Hey, if you all can get behind vampires and zombies, I’ve got to think you can at least try a weresnake. What do you have to lose? I promise not to bite…for now.

Wrigglingly yours,

Lash

Blurb from Shadow Man:

A renegade vampire begins amassing a flock of true believers, threatening America’s vampire hierarchy. Weresnake Lash partners with old enemy Danial and new allies Burl and Spiderboy to track down and annihilate them. Betrayed and left for dead, Lash reemerges the victor, edging ever upward in the Assassin’s Ranking, and catching the eye of the sultry nightclub singer Cassandra Nile. Drawn into drugs by Cassie, Lash begins to doubt himself, yearning to leave his life of violence, even as enemies close in from every side.

Excerpt from Shadow Man:

“What’s that smoke?” Spiderboy asked, changing back as he pulled on his clothes as fast as he could. “Something’s burning, and it’s huge!”

My gut clenched like a fist, and I hit the accelerator, swearing to myself.

***

I drove up to the small town outside Lafayette at dusk. It was smoking, and the grocery store and the diner were partly burned. There was no one in their homes, and no pets to be seen. The old man I’d spoken to years ago was gone, his house empty, the lights on. But something made me curious. By the breakfast plates set out in the kitchen, it was clear that he’d been fixing breakfast this very morning. So how had the vampires come for him in daylight?

We checked the other houses, our guns out and ready. Everyone was gone, though some, by the blood and mess left in the houses, had not gone willingly. By the time we were done, it was full dark.

When we went to the church, we found that it was burned too, to the ground. Standing in the still-smoldering ashes was a three-foot-tall pole, the top covered with a black bag. Spiderboy’s eyes were very wide as he stood, staring, but I just walked up to the pole, and gently took the bag off. As soon as I did, Spiderboy threw up behind me, making mewling sounds.

Stuck on the end of the pole was Jeanna’s head, her mouth lolling open to reveal a tongue that had been split by a knife so it was forked. Her fangs had been pulled out, and her eyes burnt to cinders. The word ‘traitor’ had been deeply burned into the flesh of her forehead.

I stood for a moment, considering the message. The forked tongue meant Eli knew I was spying on him, or that I’d been working with her. The brand of ‘traitor’ and the pulled fangs meant he knew it was Jacob behind this, that Jeanna hadn’t been working just with me. She’d been covered to ensure that the sun wouldn’t be able to erase what she’d suffered before I got a chance to see it.

I didn’t know who’d killed her or tortured her, but someone had come for the humans here in the day, to take them. And there was only one group I knew of that worked for Eli who could walk in daylight: the members of the werecreature church.

  2. Shadow Man is possibly the creepiest book I have ever read. It is the evolution of the serial killer. But somehow you can't help liking him. It helps if you've read LASH because that sets the scene and allows you to know why he's like that. But Shadow Man stands alone. Looking forward to the next one.
