Cole Matthews is more than he seems. Real estate is only part of the reason he’s in Australia – the other is to see Ren, and make amends somehow for the life lost. The last thing Cole expects is a woman whose humor, sweetness and sexiness give him a rush greater than any he’s ever experienced…

Torn between her growing feelings for Cole and the risks of loving yet another adventurer, Ren will have to choose between keeping her feet on the ground…and taking the most dangerous leap of her life.

MY REVIEW
5 OF 5 GLIDERS

His Unexpected Family is one of those books that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it. Once I started reading I could not out it down. I laughed and I cried and in the end when it was over it left me feeling like I was right there with Ren and Cole.

Ren is newly widowed from her husband with a new born and struggling to make sense of what happened to her husband. Her husband was a thrill seeker and adrenaline junky who lived for the next thrill that got him high. In having that attitude he died from an accident and left his wife and daughter alone to fend for themselves. Ren being a strong mother continues to work in realty to provide for her and her child. So when she receives the call of her career that can make her safe financially she is all for it.

Cole is tortured by his friends death and wants to make amends with his wife and child. Cole is also a thrill seeker and lives for the rush and high he gets from doing daring things. But Cole is tortured by the loss of friend and he sort of feels responsible so he wants to make amends with his friends widow but in order to do that he knows he can't just approach her so he decides to buy some properties and talk to her that way.

What Cole did not bank on was him falling in love with Ren. Ren has become his high because every time he is near her his heart starts to jump and beat erratically. Never has Cole felt this but will Ren take down the walls she has out up? Will she open up to Cole? Will she love him? This book is an amazing story about love, loss and redemption.

INTERVIEW WITH ROBYN THOMAS

Today I would like to thank Robyn Thomas author of His Unexpected Family. Entangled Publishing has produced a series of book hits and one of the books belongs to you. I have to say that I (stalk) check in with Entangled’s blog frequently to see what new books are available. I was so excited when I saw your book was going to be on tour. I am such a huge fan of romances that have impossible odds but end up in the happily ever after category.

Thanks so much for inviting me to visit today, Tee. I’m thrilled to be here.

How does it feel to have your debut book with Entangled?

It’s a dream come true - the best feeling ever! I was fortunate enough to have my manuscript requested after pitching it in a contest and it still seems surreal that it went all the way and became my first sale. My fellow Entangled authors, and all of the Entangled staff, are amazing to work with and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

Is His Unexpected Family written after something that happened to someone close to you?

No. I’m happy to say that everyone I know has returned safely from their travels. The extreme sports component was triggered by watching Touching the Void, and trying to write while Man Vs Wild blared on the television in the next room.

 Are you an adrenaline junkie?

Absolutely not! I have enormous admiration for people who are, but I’m never going to be one of them. I was desperate to hang glide when I was young, but in my first year of High School we had a guest speaker who’d become a quadriplegic after a hang gliding mishap. He was young and passionate and bitter, and I think he moved every single person in the room that day. I was happy to modify my dream and settle for cable hang gliding instead, and aside from some jet boating and rollercoasters that’s about it for me and adrenaline.

What was really going on inside Ren’s head when she saw Cole at the property?

When he peeled his wet shirt off? Her first thought was that she really ought to dry him off, but things escalated from there. He’d been out battling the elements – for several entire minutes - and would need his hypothermia cured by sharing her body heat. The story would’ve heated up then and there if he hadn’t driven off.

What made Cole really reach out to Ren?

He’s blown away by the unconditional love Ren has for Charlotte. He can’t imagine how soul destroying it must have been to be pregnant and alone when news of Danny’s death arrived, and since then her circumstances have deteriorated further. That she’s capable of loving so deeply when things are so dire touches him, and makes him see that everyone has an Everest to climb. Ren’s expedition – overcoming Danny’s death and carving out an alternate future for herself and Charlotte – holds more merit than anything he has ever been involved in. Earning a place on Team Ren becomes his mission, and reaching out to her is a natural first step.

If you could name two songs that inspired you to write Ren and Cole’s story what would they be and why?

My working title for the story was Freefalling, so Zoe Badwi’s song (Free Fallin’) was an obvious choice. There’s one line in particular that I really like: I’m steppin’ out of your shadow and moving into the light. I’ve always pictured Danny as the shadow, and Cole as the light.

I also used a song called Wild At Heart by Gloriana which also mentions wanting to “free fall for a while.” The other lyric that seemed made for Ren and Cole was: I’ve got forever on the tip of my tongue.

Can you give us three random things about Ren and Cole we did not read about?

Cole’s brother Nate was always their mother’s favorite. He’d been fine with that and had simply accepted the small measure of love he’d been allocated, confident he’d never lose it. What little was left of his world disintegrated when he lost his mother as well as Nate.

Ren’s pregnancy wasn’t a complete accident. She and Danny had a recurring argument about the ideal time to start a family and not long before he left he flushed her birth control pills down the drain mid-argument. It’s possible she goaded him into it. Several weeks later, on Nate’s satellite phone, she had a chance to tell Danny she was pregnant, but she didn’t take it.

Ren grew up in foster homes and never really had a family of her own. Until now.

Robyn, Thank you so much for allowing me to interview. Congrats on your debut and I can’t wait to read more form you. I read your next book for 2012 is Wish Upon A Star when will that be released and can you give us a little blurb here?

My next Indulgence, Wish Upon A Star (working title) is scheduled for December 2012. Like His Unexpected Family it’s also set in Melbourne, and goes a little like this:

Prince Charming never moved into Cinderella’s house! But mega rock star Jake Olsen is rewriting the script, complete with a fake yet headline grabbing engagement. Beth Carlisle’s insular life is shaken up and publicly dissected, but this modern day Cinderella has the ability to direct her own Happily Ever After.
